About the AGS Boston Group
We are a group of students from Stephen F. Austin High School in Austin, Texas, in a program called the Academy of Global Studies or AGS. Every year, AGS travels to distant places and this year we had the opportunity to go to Boston, Massachusetts. Our focus on this trip was migration and our group was given the Haitian migration group in Boston. We formed interviews and went to see three different gentlemen from three completely different establishments.
Oswald Neptune was the first gentlemen that we interviewed with. He is the director of the Haitian Adult Day Health Center. This center is a place where senior citizens of the Haitian culture come to spend some of their days to be entertained and to feel more comfortable in the United States. Second, we interviewed with Jean Appolan, the Artistic Director and Co-founder of Jean Appolan Expressions. He leads a Haitian dance and drum class, which we attended. Lastly, we interviewed with Franklin Dalembert, the Executive Director of The Haitian Coalition. The Coalition helps Haitians come together and advocate for the Haitians themselves in Somerville, where there is a smaller population of their people.
The Boston trip was a learning experience and it was interesting to meet different people and to hear about their lives, culture and experiences.
